About the KSO
Overview
The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1992 (as the Northern Kentucky Symphony) with a mission to make classical music attractive, accessible and affordable to people in the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati area. Since its inception, the KSO has demonstrated a unique ability to make the concert experience relevant and entertaining to its audiences, while maintaining high performance standards and integrity.
Unique, Engaging Repertoire & Presentation
Each KSO program contains both familiar and unique repertoire presented in a thematic context that is compelling and entertaining. Through the years, KSO concerts have offered many surprises, including silent films, dancers, comedians, zoo animals, alternative, rock and complete operas and musicals, country bands, a limbo contest, aerobic classes, poetry readings, Civil War battle re-enactments and more!
The KSO has also collaborated with local arts organizations such as the Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Ballet, and the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Playhouse in the Park, the Taft Museum, and community institutions such as the Cincinnati Observatory and Kentucky National Guard. You also can click the "KSO Sights & Sounds" to access KSO audio and video clips.
Subsidiary Groups
In addition to the full 70- to 90-piece orchestra, the KSO performing family includes several smaller (5- to 28-piece) groups, including the Flood Wall Jazz Quartet, Men in Black Brass Quintet, Newport Ragtime Band and the KSO Studio Orchestra (Boogie Band). Two of these groups have their own CDs available, with a third scheduled for release in 2007.
Venues
The KSO’s primary home for subscription concerts has been Greaves Concert Hall at Northern Kentucky University. Other performance venues have included Covington’s historic Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and the Devou Park Amphitheater, site of the KSO’s popular summer outdoor concerts since 1995. Additionally, the KSO’s Educational Program offers local school children a free progressive, interactive concert experience at Greaves Hall and in area schools. Contact for Bookings
